Festive Window Decor

Last Christmas (2010) I was in the mood to decorate the house and with both kids being in school full time (yay!) I had some time on my hands to be crafty. Oh, what a glorious feeling that was.....is. :-D The window over the sink is pretty plain. The previous owners had a valance there, and then I put up a sheer/lacy type valance, but that hung down almost to the second window. It wasn't ideal. I'm not sure if I saw the idea somewhere or made it up (this was pre-Pinterest, just so you know). But I decided I was going to make a ribbon valance.

So I went down to the basement and brought up the "box o' ribbon" that's been living down there since we moved in 2005. I pulled out lots of options and selected red and green satin. There was very little green (2 lengths worth), so I used some gold sheer as well. I cut random length and got out my glue gun (oh, how I had missed it!) Then I started gluing the ribbon back over on itself to make a loop. Burned the (insert word here) out of my finger, but I got the job done. I added some plastic gold balls to the ends of some of the red ribbon. But,when I put all the loops on the curtain rod, it was pretty skimpy.

So, I rooted through the box some more and came up with some more wired gold ribbon. Cut and glued some of that as well and added it on.

When it was past time to undecorate for the season, I just took each ribbon off the rod and threw the lot of it into a box and put it in the general area of Christmas decorations. When it came time to decorate this year (2011), it took me a while to find my ribbon valance. But find it I did, and I didn't really change anything.

So, to make a long post even longer. After Christmas this year, I took down my valance and left the rod sitting on the floor under the cabinets. (I'm such a neat freak, eh?) Last week I got out the Easter decorations and found a bag of plastic eggs. Well, who doesn't have more plastic eggs than they know what to do with? So, I thought, "Hmmm, I bet I could make some sore of valance with these". And I did.

I rooted through all the eggs and found ones that already had holes in them. Then I threaded my skinny satin ribbon onto an embroidery needle and attached the ribbon to the eggs. Tied the knots inside the eggs and then looped them over the curtain rod. When I hung it up, I could see that some of the lengths just weren't going to work, so I opened the eggs and shortened the length by retying the knots. And now I have a cute Easter Egg Window Valance:

Spring Wreath

I have been really (REALLY) jonesing to make this wreath that I found on Pinterest:

When I saw that AC Moore had ALL their yarn on sale this week for 30% off, I made a trip to get me some green fun fur. Well, guess what. They didn't have any. NONE. Grr.

But on my way in the store, I saw a really cute wreath that looked like a boa and had some cute Easter-y things on it (I didn't snap a picture, sorry). So, I decided that since I couldn't make this super cute green spring wreath, I would make an even cuter Easter-y wreath. I headed over to the boas.

Good grief - did you know that a single boa is $9.99?! Forget it. I stood in the aisle for a bit in a state of frustration. (Ask my dear friend, Gina - I texted her mid-frustration). Then I had a brilliant idea!

(Cue: Gru from "Despicable Me" saying, "Light Bulb")

I went back to the yarn aisle and found me some WHITE fun fur and some super cute Easter Egg pretty things and decided to make lemonade. I also incorporated the BRILLIANT idea I saw on Pinterest about using a swim noodle obtained for $1 at Dollar Tree for a wreath base instead of a floral wreath base which costs a pretty penny (and I haven't been able to find one anyway)

So, enough of my blabbering. Here's what I made:

I started with a yellow swim noodle, taped together with clear packing tape, and wrapped it with my WHITE fun fur.
Then I pinned on my cute Easter Egg pretty things:

And this is the final product, hanging on my front door:
